Down Goes Frazier

Updated: Feb 15

That quote will forever make me think of a titan being taken down in a surprising twist of events. Sadly, this time the titan is one of very own Berry Sweet family in the formidable, Sophie. She has been a force to be reckoned with since she was born and she made it 11 years of playing sports in her no holds barred, knock down, fight to the death manner for an injury to take her out of the game. If only she had another season to make a comeback, but this is it folks. Soph has played her last collegiate basketball game.

We are all struggling a little here. I truly LOVED watching Soph play. Nothing made my night more than game night and getting to watch her on the court. She is amazing to watch; especially on defense, but we will never forget the night she couldn't miss and scored 48 points in one game. But the bigger issue is watching your child suffer. Nothing hurts like watching your child hurt, physically and emotionally. We are all trying to help Sophie stay in the right frame of mind moving forward as she has a long road ahead of pre operative recovery, surgery and post operative recovery as well.

Copied below is my post on Facebook from a couple of weeks ago:

I have blocked Sophie from this post as she is still coming to terms with the results, but wanted to update those of you who have been messaging and keeping her in your thoughts. She's had a lot taken from her the past week but we are trying to focus on the positives.

Her ACL is indeed torn and possibly her meniscus as well. Her MRI coming up will merely clarify what the doctor was able to tell yesterday. He wanted to do surgery ASAP but she would like to finish her clinicals for the surg. tech. program so that she can still graduate this spring. This means postponing surgery until May. Soph is coming to grips with playing her last basketball game and losing a season of horse showing when it was Pepper's last junior/futurity year. (We are still hopeful she may be back by futurity time.)

We are thankful that she will be able to finish clinicals and graduate. We are trying to remind her that at least she got to do her last youth year for horse showing and she has many many years ahead of her as an adult to show (PS - I think Pepper is going to be okay with a few more months off). We are trying to remind her that she will get to be a part of a fantastic team still and get a taste of coaching from the sidelines (which she has been interested in the past). While it is career ending, she is blessed that she had the amazing basketball career that she did get to have.

I'm holding back tears as I share this. It is one of the hardest things in the world to be helpless as your child is hurting but we remind her constantly that she has a huge support network praying for her peace with what this year will bring. Someday this will be a blip on her life story and what we hope she will remember is how lifted up, loved and supported she was through this time. Thank you so much to all of you who have reached out and kept her in your thoughts and prayers. We will get through this thanks to all of you.

The post has lit up with people sharing their stories, their prayers and their condolences. Everyone gets it and I hope Sophie can truly see how much she is loved through all of this.

Posting about her torn ACL (and possible meniscus) has caused me to see just how many folks have damaged their ACL in their lives. I'm sitting her thankful that, while I have terrible feet, my knees at least are still getting me from point A to point B like champs. How about all of you? Anyone have a story to share with us?

Wishing you all happy and healthy days ahead!
